Abstract: the syntax-prosody interface
Grammatic theories, regardless the school, state that we cannot correctly explain grammar without taking into account prosody. Structures such as cleft or subordinate clauses need a intonational explanation together with the classical dependence one. However, in most cases, the importance of intonation is highlighted without specifying what intonation does.
In this course we will learn the basics of prosody and apply it to construction grammar analyses. Specifically, we will start explaining prosody’s phonetic correlates and train in order to differentiate pitch contour forms. Then, we will address its main functions in intonation languages (we will focus on the marking of information structure, syntactic boundaries and communicative function).
After that, we we'll take a look at some transcription conventions (Aix-en-Provence and ToBI systems applied to Spanish and Portuguese) to, finally, explain how we can integrate intonational analysis in construction grammar, how it can help us to understand grammaticalization processes and how we can analyze several constructions in Spanish and in your Portuguese data.
